The very lovely Southern Red Muntjac or Barking Deer, widespread throughout Southeast Asia. Although at this stage this deer’s survival status is not considered a risk, ( a subspecies of Muntjac, Fea’s Muntjac, is very much at risk); the forests where this deer lives are of concern: they are quickly being decimated by palm oil plantations. And the predators who prey on this species are on the demise – with some of them such as tigers, reaching crisis point. With fewer predators, there’s no population control, and then this species might be in trouble: too many deer and not enough vegetation to feed them all. Palm oil’s impacts s may not always be direct, but  it can – and is – affecting many species of forest dwellers.
