April 2016 News Updates
Yet another beautiful and unusual inhabitant of the South-east asian rainforests, is the Rhinocererous Hornbill. One of the largest hornbills, this bird is about the size of a swan and can live in captivity for about 90 years. Its claim to fame is that it is the state bird of Sarawak, a state of Malaysia, and is also the country’s national bird. Its statue is worshipped by some indigenous tribes. Like many other forest inhabitants, this bird is threatened by habitat loss and hunting for its beak and cacque, which can be carved for ornaments. Unfortunately the IUCN’s status for this bird is Near-Threatened. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_hornbill)
